Southport Strangers Charity provided medical support and subscribers gave a sum of money each year. They were allowed to recommend an individual to receive free medical treatment for a period of approximately 3 weeks. The charity was situated on Lord Street and eventually became the Southport dispensary in 1823. A purpose-built building was commissioned by donations to the design of Thomas Withnell and opened in 1853 in Seabank Road. The hospital was extended and became the Southport Convalescent and Sea Bathing Hospital in 1862. The hospital eventually closed in 1990 and was converted into luxury apartment flats. |
