Comments During this era the Lancashire and Yorkshire rail company operated the line between Liverpool and Southport. The disaster happened when the points failed to close properly and the express train from Liverpool to Southport collided with another local train which had been diverted into a siding. Twenty people in the front coach lost their lives.
