| Comments | After the death of his daughter Sophia, John Philips Mather decided to build a church as a memorial. Lord Derby presented the land to church authorities in 1865. The foundation stone was laid on August 16th, 1865, and costing £8000 it was completed 12 months later. William Slater and R. Herbert designed the church in gothic style and Dave Brothers of London completed the build. The building is dressed in red and yellow sandstone from the nearby Sandfield quarry. Internally there is an unusual feature of black and red bricks. The Consecration Service was held in the morning on the Feast of St Luke, Thursday October 18th, 1866. John Philips Mather paid for the building and endowed the church with £100 per year. Sophia is remembered with an inscription under the west window. The church has a Grade II listing. |
